Choirs, Cantors and Instrumentalists

SS. Cyril and Methodius Parish has a place for everyone to share their musical gifts with God and our community. Below is more detailed information about each of the many music ministry opportunities available. For more information and/or to become involved in any of these ministries, please contact our Director of Music, Miroslawa Sojka-Topor, by phone or e-mail.

Celestial Choir

  • Open to people high school age and older
  • Rehearses weekly on Thursdays from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. (September -May)
  • Sings weekly for the 10:30 a.m. Sunday mass (September – May) and on occasion for other special liturgies as needed

Polish Choir

  • Open to people high school age and older who can sing in Polish
  • Rehearses weekly on Mondays from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.
  • Sings weekly for the 8:30 a.m. Sunday mass and on occasion for other special liturgies as needed

Youth Choir

  • Open to students in the 3rd through 12th grade (2nd graders may join if they have an older sibling who also sings in the choir)
  • Rehearses weekly on Thursdays from 4:00 to 4:45 p.m. (September – May)
  • Sings weekly for the 5:30 p.m. Saturday mass (September – May) and on occasion for other special liturgies as needed

Polish Children’s Choir

  • Open to children who can sing in Polish
  • Rehearses weekly on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. (September – June)
  • Sings at mass every first Sunday of the month (September – June)

Resurrection Choir

  • Open to adults who are available during the day
  • Rehearsals are typically held just prior to each funeral
  • Sings for funerals as requested

Cantors

  • Cantors are song leaders who lead the congregating in singing music for each mass
  • Open to people high school age and up who demonstrate the appropriate proficiency
  • Rehearse twice per month on Thursdays from 6:15 to 7:00 p.m. in the church choir loft
  • Sing for masses as available and assigned
  • Scheduling is flexible; cantors can sing as often (or as little) as they like

Brass, Woodwind, and String Musicians

  • Open to people high school age and up who demonstrate the appropriate proficiency
  • Rehearse on occasion as needed
  • Play for various masses throughout the year
  • Scheduling is flexible; musicians can play as often (or as little) as they like

Substitute Pianists and/or Organists

  • Open to people high school age and up who demonstrate the appropriate proficiency
  • Serve on occasion as the accompanist for masses in the absence of the Director of Music

Note: All adults over the age of 18 who participate in Music Ministry at SSCM, except for the Resurrection Choir, are required to comply with the Archdiocesan standards for working with children, including participating in a background check and the Protecting God’s Children
workshop.

Sacramental Music

Weddings (English)
Wedding couples must contact Miroslawa Sojka-Topor, Director of Music, at least one to two months prior to the wedding date to set up a music consultation meeting. At your meeting, you will be able to hear a wide range of music choices for your wedding and select the music that best suits your needs and desires. Weddings (Polish)
Wedding couples must contact our Polish organist, Casey Szwab, at least one to two months prior to the wedding date to set up a music consultation meeting. Casey may be reached by phone at (815) 886-5293.

Funerals
Families arranging a funeral are given the opportunity to meet with a Bereavement Minister to choose appropriate music and readings for the liturgy. The Bereavement Minister will guide you and provide you with appropriate options of music. Families may choose to have either a soloist or the Resurrection Choir provide music for the funeral.
