Saint Methodius |
Cyril and Methodius were two Greek brothers who ultimately became missionaries, teachers and patrons of the Slavic peoples.
Before entering the monastery Methodius was a governor of Greece. Cyril, though asked to govern went instead to the monastery.
The emperor of Moravia asked Cyril and Methodius to go among the Slavic people to teach them about Christ and the Church. They accepted this task.
Cyril's first task was to invent an alphabet. This became the Cyrillic alphabet.
Together they translated the gospels and liturgical books into Slavic.
Cyril, long an invalid, died in Rome 50 days after taking the monastic habit in the year 869.
Methodius continued his mission for 16 more years. Consecrated a bishop, he was given a diocese in present day Yugoslavia. He is credited with translating the whole Bible into Slavic in eight months. He died on the Tuesday of Holy Week in 884.
Patrons of Moravia, and especially venerated by Catholic Czechs, Slovaks, Croatians, Orthodox Serbians and Bulgarians, Cyril and Methodius are eminently fitted to guard the long-desired unity of East and West.
