PHYSICAL EDUCATION GRADES I - 3

Physical Education is that part of the educational process which contributes to the mental, physical, social, and emotional growth and development of each child through the medium of physical activity.

To achieve these goals, we will offer a non-graded motor skills development course for grades 1-3 using a wide variety of equipment. Various size balls, jump ropes, a parachute, sponge polo equipment, scooters, bean bags, hoola hoops, scarves, gymnastic mats and balance beams will be used.

The emphasis on the primary grades is a movement education program designed to present various skills in a non-threatening manner to allow children of this age to experience positive feelings. Because the primary objective is for each child to become more physically skilled and to succeed at his/her individual ability, the children will be working more independently as opposed to team-type sports. Although some children at this age can handle team games, it is my experience that individual and small groups work best at this level in fostering skill development and self-confidence. The children will be introduced to skills that they will be using in years to come.

Due to the limited amount of time the children are in class, I highly encourage parents to also pursue individual fitness programs for their children. Recent statistics indicate that fitness levels in American children are still declining and the need to establish lifetime fitness activities is great. Children this age really enjoy moving and unstructured play activities in a non-competitive environment with an emphasis on FUN can do much to increase fitness levels for all.

The students will not be graded on their report cards, but they will be given credit grades. I will be closely monitoring gross movement skills and will contact you if your child is having any specific problem. Students will be required to wear a SS. Cyril and Methodius School T-shirt or sweatshirt, shorts or sweatpants and gym shoes. I ask that you print their last name on the back collar of the sweatshirt, as the children will nor be allowed to remove their sweatshirt unless it can be identified as their own. For safety reasons, children may not participate in class without gym shoes. All gym shoes must be laced and properly tied. Please do not send your child in thick-soled shoes (Skechers) since they are not flexible or slip-on gym shoes. The children must be able to move around easily and not have to worry about their shoes. If your child is scheduled for Gym on a Dress-Down Day, please send them in appropriate clothes and gym shoes.

I also ask that any girl with long hair, please have it either pinned back or held back by a elastic headband. This is for their safety so they will be able to look down and not have their hair in the way.

A written request is required to be excused from Physical Education classes. If your child has any physical limitations or medical problems, please write a note to this effect and send it with your child as soon as possible.

I appreciate your support in having your child prepared for class. Please fee] free to contact me if you have any questions or suggestions.

Thank You
